Job Description Summary

Under general guidance and supervision, operates state of the art CAD/CAM software (Cimatron/Solid Works), high speed mill (Mikron HSM400) and EDM (Charmille 35P) equipment to produce prototype parts, thermo-plastic and thermo-set injection molds, and lab equipment used in the development of new products or changes to existing products. Working from computer generated models (3D solid or surface model files) to design/program toolpaths for electrode and direct milling operations. Generally, output is compared to, or created from approved 3D-source model. Work is checked against design with use of precision measuring tools (Nikon VS/Zeiss CMM). Work accuracy is not checked by supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Operates lathe, mill, drill press, CNC EDM, HSM and lathe machine tools, and various grinders with proficiency required to produce parts necessary for the construction of new prototype machinery, equipment, molds, and product prototypes.  Capability to program 3D CNC Mill tool paths for both electrode and direct milling operations preferred.

• Performs machining tasks necessary for the maintenance and repair of prototype equipment to support Technology Project Development.

• Plans and lays out work. Makes standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds of machinery. Selects materials, parts and equipment required for each assignment.

• Able to work from 3D models, 2D drawings, blueprints, schematics or verbal instructions to produce simple and complex mechanisms, tools, jigs, and fixtures.

• Able to use precision measuring instruments and hand tools to accomplish assigned tasks.

• Ability to operate injection molding press would be desirable. Ability to design rapid tools and run high speed mill would be desirable.

• Comply with all local, state, federal, and BD safety regulations, policies, and procedures including RCRA Hazardous Waste regulations.

• Comply with all local BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through consistent application of sound quality assurance principles.

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education: 

• A.A. or A.S. Degree in technical field related to job function preferred or High School Degree with Journeyman’s certificate in moldmaking or equivilent preferred.

Minimum Experience:

• 5 - 10 years directly related mold making experience preferred.  Must be able to operate lathes, milling machines, EDM and surface grinders with a high degree of skill. Extensive injection mold building, tool and die fabrication preferred.  3D CAD/CAM skills/experience also preferred. 

• Job skills should be equal to those of a Journeyman and are usually acquired through formal training programs.

             Note: Additional experience may be traded on a year for year basis with education.
